What is Night shift allowance?
Also called night allowance.
Definition
A night shift allowance is an additional payment for working overnight hours. It is a contractual benefit in most Indian private employment rather than a central statutory entitlement.
How it works
Because it is contractual, the amount and the qualifying hours are whatever the policy says, which makes writing them down the whole job. The related statutory questions are different ones: whether the person may be rostered at night at all, and what facilities must be provided.
What it means in India
Restrictions and conditions on night work, particularly for women employees, sit in state Shops and Establishments Acts and in the Factories Act 1948, and several states have relaxed them subject to conditions such as consent, transport and security arrangements. The conditions vary by state and have changed over time, so check the current position in your own state rather than assuming a national rule.
What people get wrong
- Assuming a national rule on night work for women. It is a state question with conditions attached.
- Paying a night allowance without defining the qualifying hours, so every roster change reopens the argument.

Where this shows up in practice
Almost everything on this page ends up as a line on a payslip or a figure in a register. Shiftelio keeps attendance, leave, salary structure and the statutory deductions in one place, so the number in the letter and the number in the payslip come from the same record.
This entry was written and checked in August 2026 for Indian employers. It is general information, not legal or tax advice. Statutory thresholds, contribution rates and slab tables are revised from time to time, and several of the rules described here come from state legislation that genuinely differs between states, so check the position that applies to your own establishment before acting.
