What is Basic salary?

Also called basic pay.

Definition

Basic salary is the core fixed component of a salary structure, and the base on which provident fund, gratuity and several other statutory amounts are computed.

How it works

Because so much is calculated on it, basic is the component with the most consequences. A structure with a small basic and a large special allowance reduces the employer provident fund contribution and the eventual gratuity, and increases take-home today at the cost of the employee retirement corpus.

What it means in India

Provident fund is computed on basic wages and dearness allowance under the Employees Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952, and gratuity under the Payment of Gratuity Act 1972 is computed on last drawn wages, taken as basic plus dearness allowance. Indian courts have looked closely at structures that split pay into allowances to shrink the provident fund base, so a basic that is a small fraction of gross is not a neutral choice.

What people get wrong

  • Setting basic very low to raise take-home. It shrinks the provident fund contribution and the gratuity, both of which belong to the employee, and it attracts scrutiny.
  • Raising the gross at appraisal while leaving basic untouched. It is visible in the structure and it quietly holds the employee retirement savings flat through a promotion.

Terms this one depends on

It is not salary, and the money that reaches the employee bank account each month is always less than a twelfth of it.EPF. Where this shows up in practice

Almost everything on this page ends up as a line on a payslip or a figure in a register. Shiftelio keeps attendance, leave, salary structure and the statutory deductions in one place, so the number in the letter and the number in the payslip come from the same record.
