What is Gross salary?
Also called gross pay.
Definition
Gross salary is the total of all salary components before any deduction: basic, house rent allowance and every other allowance added together.
How it works
Gross sits between CTC and net. It excludes the employer side contributions that inflate CTC, and it is measured before the employee side deductions that reduce take-home. It is the figure most payroll arithmetic starts from, including loss of pay and leave encashment.
What it means in India
Gross monthly salary is what a payslip shows as earnings before the deductions block. It matters beyond the payslip because statutory thresholds are read against wage definitions: employee state insurance eligibility under the Employees State Insurance Act 1948 is tested against a wage ceiling, and professional tax slabs in most states are read on monthly salary. Note that "wages" is defined separately in each act and does not always mean the same set of components as gross.
What people get wrong
- Treating gross and CTC as interchangeable. They differ by the employer contributions, which is usually thirteen percent or more of basic.
- Assuming every act uses gross as its wage base. Provident fund is computed on basic and allied wages, not on gross, and the difference is the whole reason salary structures are argued about.

Where this shows up in practice
Almost everything on this page ends up as a line on a payslip or a figure in a register. Shiftelio keeps attendance, leave, salary structure and the statutory deductions in one place, so the number in the letter and the number in the payslip come from the same record.
This entry was written and checked in August 2026 for Indian employers. It is general information, not legal or tax advice. Statutory thresholds, contribution rates and slab tables are revised from time to time, and several of the rules described here come from state legislation that genuinely differs between states, so check the position that applies to your own establishment before acting.
